Darth Plagueis - The Novel

The prequels will never be the same. After reading this novel I know two things for sure: 1, this story line could replace episode 1, Phantom Menace, and do much more justice towards the eventual downfall of the republic and the Jedi, as well as the rebirth of the Sith. 2, if you don't appreciate the prequels now, after this novel, you will.

From The Author:  "The principal story arc in 'Darth Plagueis' spans several decades. The challenge was to create a 'history' of a kind without eclipsing the characters who are in effect making history. Fortunately, the Star Wars universe is so large that I was able to research the book almost in the same way I would have a more traditional historical novel. As it progressed, I was forced to hew more closely to established lore, but even then it proved possible to shed light on what was going on in the wings behind the scenes."
―James Luceno

Darth Plagueis. The apprentice, Sith Lord, investment capitalist, mad scientist, and manufacturer of the machinations that eventually destroyed the Republic. Darth Plagueis's transition thru this novel is full circle. From his beginning tutelage under the Bith Darth Tenebrous to the fatal ending at his apprentice's hand, this story leaves no undesired detail unturned. Although this is the story of Darth Plagueis, I found what captivated me most about the novel was how his actions molded the outcomes from episodes 1 to 6.

THE PREQUELS - how the past explains the future. The events in Darth Plagueis are pre-Phantom Menace by 100 years up to the Gungan and Naboo celebration in Theed. These are what redefined the prequels for me:

Why Palpatine? With a galaxy filled with force sensitive sentient beings, what makes one truly worthy of the Rule of Two? Whether it be his training under Plagueis or the will of the Dark Side, Palpatine had all the tools to live a fulfilling, lucrative life before the Sith. Much like Padme, Palpatine comes from one of the most noble, aristocratic families on Naboo. It is the will of the Force that Plagueis and Palpatine's path cross during the prospecting of plasma on Naboo. Plagueis entices Palpatine with the benefits of a greater calling and a more galactic influential role in galactic politics. Plagueis knew that for the Sith to come out of their 1000 year hibernation it would take a full reconstruction of the republic and a Sith Lord in full control of all the strings that connect the galaxy to do so, and Palpatine was the poster child of political greatness. His goal was a co-chancellorship with Palpatine. Palpatine's path from student to Sith Lord is complete after his brutal killings of his family after they try and wedge a gap between him and Plagueis. As Sidious and Senator Palpatine, his master’s influence as part of the International Banking Clan help create Palpatine's constituents as well as those backwards deals with the Trade Federation. It is Palpatine as the face of the Sith's swift, cunning, and secretive actions, it was Plagueis conducting the master plan from start to his finish.

Why Naboo? Does Naboo strike you as an odd place for a bunch of neimoidians to create a blockade? What are they taxing? Why does this matter? Prospectors on Naboo discovered a great galactic resource of plasma that was to be harvested from the planet and sold among the stars. Plagueis was the broker that was helping fund the deal that would put Naboo on the galactic commerce map. There was resistance from the elder family's on Naboo to sell and harvest the natural resources until the Sith helped get a new ruler on Naboo that would play this puzzle to their favor. After the approval to begin mining, Naboo had no method of dispersing the plasma. Introducing the Trade Federation. Naboo was part of a trade free zone thus not subjecting it to taxation. The Sith's plot was to plant the seed I the senate to create taxation in trade free zones, leading to the blockade of Naboo that would get deliberated in the senate until either the queen signed a peace treaty or the senate over through the current chancellor and elected a New Democratic leader. All parties necessary in the reimergence of the Sith.

Why Dooku? Both Sith sensed the discontent in Dooku with the Jedi and the current state of the republic. Plagueis knew with the events of corruption in the senate he influenced and the upcoming actions on Naboo, the he would have the would-be Count Dooku of Serenno, helping Palpatine with the rebuilding of the republic. Palpatine also had his own agenda, not revealing his true identity, while pulling the Count closer as an adversary and possible partner as the face of the seperatists and possible apprentice. He knew there was a darkness to Dooku, but need to learn more about the Count before creating an alliance.

Why Syfo-Dyas? For the pivotal character that Syfo-Dyas was, i do not think any of the movies gave his role the true justice of how important of a role he played in the Clone Wars. Everyone knows he order the Clone Army, but why? Plagueis met many Jedi in testing the hiding in plain view of the Sith. In his discussions with Syfo-Dyas , he saw the clairvoyant views of the Jedi Master and agreed that the Republic would eventually need an army that is much larger than what the Jedi could ever handle. With much persuasion, Plagueis's own funds would help assist in payment for the purchase of the clone army. Syfo-Dyas's fate was not revealed in this novel but we eventually know it is at the hands of Dooku as a test by Sidious, where the procurer of the clones meets his end.

Why Maul? Maul has an interesting beginning with the Sith. Much like Ventress from the Clone Wars, he was viewed by Plagueis as Sidious's assassin. Sidious learns of Maul on a political venture on Dathomir. A Nightsister senses the darkness and force sensitivity of Palpatine and gives up her child. Maul was born a twin and would have been sacrificed based on Nightsister traditions. Maul was unaware the Sidious had a master but Plagueis approved of Sidious's apprentice while he was still valuable. Sidious treated him like a true apprentice and intended on ruling with him after overtaking his master, but did not expect his failed against Obi-Wan on Naboo.

The Force - the give and take relationship with Plagueis. The Sith Lord was facinated and studied the nature of midiclorians and the force with in many different species in his private sanctuary on Muunilist. His experiments could be classified as the most extreme forms of torture; bringing beings as close to death and bringing them back to life to study the life forms that bind all life together. His cruel experiments and manipulations of the dark side were all at the principal of finding a method to preserve and prolong his life. Through his many experiments his theory on the balance of the force maintained the same; for each evil action there was a counter action to offset the prior. His most evil action, was undone by his own doings.

The Prophesy....The Chosen One....A Vergence of the Force....There was no Father.... Anakin Skywalker's tale has no truer beginning than as the counter action of all the vile, cruel, and perverse experiments of Darth Plagueis. Coinciding with Plagueis's belief that for all the sinister manipulation of midiclorians experiential he performed, that there was a counter action to balance his dark plans. After learning that a child was born, of the highest concentration of midiclorians, a true birth of the force, he knew that this was the retaliation of all the plans he had set in motion. In Plagueis's words, "this will be our undoing". Palpatine took another stance on this child, that he would let the Jedi train him, as he could not train him in his current political stature. He would be the kind, nurturing father figure and earn his trust, the same way Plagueis had lured him.

The apprentice becomes the master, the master falls to his apprentice. The final moment between the two Sith was more than just "being killed by his apprentice in his sleep". Plagueis vowed to not rest until all their work had seen the triumph as co chancellor Sith Lords. It was that venerable moment as Palpatine is elected chancellor that he reveals his plans that no longer include his master. I won't spoil that thrilling moment but I do want to mention that Palpatine was not the Sith Master during Phantom Menace. He was an apprentice, with his assassin/apprentice Maul acting for Plagueis and the greater good of the Sith.

My final thoughts: James Luceno does a brilliant job of linking the expanded universe novels, clone wars saga, and the movies in this novel. I guess you could say it would be easy to write stories based in other works of literature, but were this succeeds is with its gracefulness. Even though I knew the outcomes of the major events in the story, a different perspective made me feel like I was reliving some of those scenes for the first time. There are only a few Star Wars novels that would top Darth Plagueis, but none that make episodes I to III more than this.

Fatal Alliance - An Old Republic Novel -

Tassaa Bareesh, a matriarch in the Hutt crime cartel, is holding an auction that’s drawing attention from across the galaxy. Representatives of both the Republic and the Sith Empire are present, along with a Jedi Padawan sent to investigate, a disenfranchised trooper drummed out of the Republic’s elite Blackstar Squad, and a mysterious Mandalorian with a private agenda. But the Republic’s envoy is not what he seems. The Empire’s delegate is a ruthless Sith apprentice. The Jedi Padawan is determined to do the right thing and terrified that he can’t. The trooper hopes to redeem her reputation. And the Mandalorian is somehow managing to keep one step ahead of everyone.

None of these guests—invited or uninvited—have any intention of participating in the auction. Instead they plan to steal the prize, which is locked inside an impregnable vault, two burned chunks of an exploded star cruiser, one of which may hold the key to the wealth of an entire world.

But the truth about the treasure is dangerous and deadly. And in the end, Sith and Jedi, Republic and Empire, must do something they’ve never done before, something that all the agents of good and evil could never make them do: join together to stop a powerful threat that could destroy the galaxy...

----------------------------------------

After months of anticipation and watching numerous trailers leading up to the new era in Star Wars, Fatal Alliance delivered a story that is one apart from any story told in the EU. Since all the hype of the Star Wars, the Old Republic MMORPG that I have bought into, I wanted more on those characters we are being introduced to. Fatal Alliance let us peak into some, but created new story lines to follow and potentially new events to look forward to in their stories.

The events of Fatal Alliance take place approximately 3 years after the Sacking of Coruscant (a little of that can be seen in the Deceived Trailer), and reference important events leading to the beginning, like the Sacking of Coruscant, Cold War, and Annexation of Kiffu which, after reading this story, make me look forward to much more in this era.

Sean Williams created this book with an extreme depth of detail and a lot of story lines running at the same time. It was extremely easy to follow with all these intertwining story lines. My two favorites where what we would consider potentially the light and dark side of the story, Jedi and Sith, although this was full of smuggler / politician / Mandalorian / Hutt Drama, in addition to the battle of the two sides of the Force.

All parties are lured to Hutta for an auction of a glorious find by the Smuggler Jet Nebula that could lead to the discovery of a completely new planet and a world full of new resources. The Kiffar Jedi Padawan Shigar Konshi is mixed in the middle of this struggle for the jewel that has the interest of the Republic and Empire and is acting as an ambassador of the Republic. Apprentice to the Grand Master Satele Shan, long descendant of Bastilla Shan from Knights of the Old Republic, her Padawan is struggling to earn his Knighthood and this is also a story about his journey. Shigar meets up with another Kiffar female that assists in his journey.

The Eldon Ax, Sith apprentice to Darth Chratis, she too is in a struggle for her own identity as well as a power struggle with her master. She will be faced with decisions that question her loyalties and values when faced with ghosts from her past. The Sith story line is very dark and very good!

The piece of technology and planet Sebbadon that everyone is after is nothing like anything in Star Wars to date. The droid technology is self reproducing and defending it self, as well as changing with the threats presented and the preservation of their selves. Empire, Republic, and the Mandalorians unite to battle an enemy that is set to destroy the Republic. I was fascinated by the story from beginning to end and look forward to more of The Old Republic

Like Obi-Wan said in Dexters Dinner, “Well, if droids could think, there'd be none of us here would there?”

Darth Maul Saboteur - E Book -

On the distant planet Dorvalla, precious ore is mined by two competing companies: InterGalactic Ore and Lommite Limited. Neither rival suspects that they are central to a sinister plot masterminded by Darth Sidious, Lord of the Sith, himself.

Dispatched by Sidious on his very first solo mission, Darth Maul infiltrates Lommite Limited. There, his unique gifts of deception and subterfuge will set off an explosive chain of events that could destroy both companies, leaving them ripe for takeover by the Trade Federation. But a vengeful Lommite Limited Manager with his own thirst for retaliation against InterGal could blow Maul's cover — and all of Sidious's fiendishly laid plans…

-----------------------------------
After I had first listened to the Audio book Shadow Hunter, I was super excited for purchasing Shadow Hunter and reading it again for this bonus E Book included in the mass market paperback.  I figured this would get more into the awesome character that was Darth Maul.  I was grossly disappointed.  Although this book was not terrible, it was short and left much more to be desired.

James Luceno, awesome author of Cloak of Deception and Rise are the Dark Lord, wrote this 54 page novel which should have been included with Cloak of Deception.  This entire book took place before all the events on Dorvalla, and really set the stage for what would happen at Dorvalla.  This E book was mostly a trade dispute between two Ore companies, with Maul playing the saboteur of each company for the greater good of the Trade Federation, which leads to the beginning of the Cloak of Deception novel.

This would not be a bad introduction to Cloak of Deception and should have been the included in that novel.  Not completely terrible, but bad placement to read with Shadow Hunter.  Fatal Alliance releases this week, prepare for some awesome Sith madness.

"Tell me what you regard as your greatest strength, so I will know how best to undermine you; tell me of your greatest fear, so I will know which I must force you to face; tell me what you cherish most, so I will know what to take from you; and tell me what you crave, so that I might deny you…"

Darth Maul Shadow Hunter - Novel - Old Republic

After years of waiting in the shadows, Darth Sidious is taking the first step in his master plan to bring the Republic to its knees. Key to his scheme are the Neimoidians of the Trade Federation. Then one of his Neimoidian contacts disappears, and Sidious does not need his Force-honed instincts to suspect betrayal. He orders his apprentice, Darth Maul, to hunt the traitor down.

But he is too late. The secret has already passed into the hands of information broker Lorn Pavan, which places him right at the top of Darth Maul's hit list. Then, in the labyrinthine alleyways and sewers of Coruscant, capital city of the Republic, Lorn crosses paths with Darsha Assant, a Jedi Padawan on a mission to earn her Knighthood. Now the future of the Republic depends on Darsha and Lorn. But how can an untried Jedi and an ordinary man, stranger to the powerful ways of the Force, hope to triumph over one of the deadliest killers in the galaxy?

--------------------

Shadow Hunter is an extremely exciting novel that gives birth to the Episode 1.  It continues on the timeline of exactly where Cloak of Deception left of with the Trade Federations beginnings of the Blockade of Naboo.  Hath Monchar, Nemodian assistant of Nute Gunray, power hungery and driven by deceiving the Sith and his fellow Nemodians.  He plans to sell the plans of the upcoming Blockade of Naboo for his financial benefits.  When Sidious checks on his plans for the blockade, he fears the worst as one of the four Nemodians are missing from their meeting, and sends his Jedi hungry apprentice, Darth Maul, to stop the information from being released, and to "handle" the situation.

Lorn Pavan (previously blogged his legacy) and his droid counterpart I5YQ, or short I-Five are information brokers and in search of their next big score.  They end up mixing up with the Hath Monchar, and are setting up to purchase his holocron with the information regarding the Trade Federations plot over Naboo.  Their intentions are to sell the plans to Yantha the Hutt.

Darsha Assant (left), human female Jedi Padawan to Master Anoon Bondara, Twi-lek male (right), is on the verge of earning her title as Jedi Knight and has one task to earn that role after her many years of training.  She has to go into the Crimson Corridor, in the depths of Coruscants underworld to safely escort a witness in protection in an upcoming trial.  Darsha engages a journey where she doubts her force ability and her role as a Jedi.

Obi-Wan Kenobi also has a large part in this story although he is always a few steps behind the main story line and never quite catches up to Darsha, Lorn, or Maul; As Kenobi is sent to investigate the disappearance of Darsha and her Master.

Michael Reaves is genius with his portrayal of this story.  In Mauls pursuit for destroying Hath Monchar and the holocron, he is out witted by the unlikely Lorn Pavan and I-Five many times.  Lorn and I-Five have a relationship that is similar to if Han Solo was partnered with a Wookie / C-3PO combo.  But I-Five is no prissy protocol droid, removed of his creativity dampers and equipped with firearms, he is almost as deadly as a human assassin. Darsha and the human droid pair team up to elude the Sith through the bowels of Coruscant.  They serve as an unlikely pair due to Lorn's discuss for the Jedi Order.  This book has many turns and digs deep into the red and black tattooed Zabrak that is Darth Maul.  A ruthless, Jedi hating, failure not even an option, Sith apprentice is really bad ass through the entire book.  This book also includes the bonus, only previously available in E-Book format, Darth Maul - Saboteur, by James Luceno.

There is no death; There is only the Force.

Cloak of Deception - Novel - Old Republic

After a thousand generations of peace, the
Galactic Republic is crumbling. On Coruscant,
at the center of civilized space, greed and
corruption riddle the Senate, beyond even
the abilities of Supreme Chancellor Valorum
to remedy. And in the outlying systems, the
Trade Federation dominates the hyperlanes
with its gargantuan vessels.

But now even the Trade Federation finds
itself assailed from all quarters, preyed
upon by pirates and raiders, and victimized
by terrorists, who demand an end to the
Federation's tyrannical practices.

It is a time that tests the mettle of all
those who strive to hold the Republic
together—none more than the Jedi
Knights, who have long been the
Republic's best hope for preserving peace
and justice…

Mired in greed and corruption, tangled in bureaucracy, the Galactic Republic is crumbling. In the outlying systems, where the Trade Federation maintains a stranglehold on shipping routes, tensions are boiling over—and now even the comfort of Coruscant is being invaded, as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi foil an assassination attempt on Supreme Chancellor Valorum.

As humans and aliens gather for an emergency trade summit, conspiracies sealed with large sums of money run rampant, and no one is entirely above suspicion. But the greatest threat of all remains unknown to everyone except three members of the Trade Federation who have entered into a shadowy alliance with a dark overlord. While the trio will be content with more money and fewer problems, Darth Sidious has grander, far more terrifying plans.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My second attempt at Cloak of Deception proved all the worthiness as James Luceno's prior novels.  Luceno brings depth to the apprenticeship of Obi-Wan Kenobi and the brilliance and wisdom of Qui-Gon Jinn.  Set prior to the events of the Trade Blockade of Naboo, this novel brings curiosity again to watch Phantom Menace and see the repercussions of these events.
Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are set investigating actions of the Nebula Front terrorist group around Outer Rim world Dorvalla.  Neimoidian Daultay Dofine Captain of the ship Revenue's mining actions on Dorvalla was unaware of the stown away Jedi.  After the invasion of the Revenue by Captain Cohl's Nebula Front, the Jedi are quick on the tail of Cohl, but eludes the Jedi after the Revenue explodes.
This novel politically plants the seeds for the birth of the Separatists.  Also including multiple assassination attempts on the Super Chancellor Valorum's life.  Senator Palpatine is also sowing the seeds of the ultimate destruction of the Old Republic, and is using Valorum as a puppet for his own interests.  There is much depth to the story and we journey with so many Jedi that are so untouched in the movies: Vergere (bird like humanoid), Yaddle (female of yoda's species), Oppo Ranscis (snake creature) and Even Piell (pink version of yoda).  We also witness the beginnings of Govenor Tarkin, and the beginning of the reigning Queen of Naboo.  If you are biased to the movie Phatom Menace, the adventure that is Cloak of Deception may change your views on the movie.
I know Phantom Menace is probably the most criticized Star Wars movie, but this novel made me appreciate a lot the movie and enjoy it in its entirety.
"Qui-Gon Jinn was perhaps the greatest Jedi alive, a commanding presence at Council, a strong and brave warrior who refused to be intimidated by even the most daunting challenge, and a good and kind man."
Order 66 - Republic Commando Novel - Old Republic / Clone Wars
The Clone Wars rage to their bloody climax. Treachery reigns. Treason takes courage. Commandos, Jedi, and the entire Galactic Republic must face the end of life as they know it…and the dreaded dawn of a new empire.
After the fierce combat of Hard Contact, Triple Zero, and True Colors comes the spectacular culmination of New York Times bestselling author Karen Traviss's gripping Republic Commando series. As a battle-scarred era nears its end, a shattering power play is about to stun the entire galaxy…and set in motion events that will alter destinies and resound throughout history.
Even as the Clone Wars are about to reach an explosive climax, no one knows if victory will favor the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) or the Separatists. But no matter who wins, the stakes are highest for elite Special Ops clones like the Republic Commandos in Omega and Delta squads—and the notorious renegade Advance Recon Commando troopers known as Null ARCs.
With Republic forces stretched to the max and casualties mounting, the last thing these beleaguered warriors need to hear is that Chancellor Palpatine is keeping vast armies of secret clone troops in reserve. Sergeant Skirata, a mentor to the clone commandos, has no intention of standing idly by while Palpatine sends them into battle like lambs to the slaughter. Skirata begins to plan the clones' escape from the GAR, but his heroic effort will be in vain unless he can reverse the clones' accelerated aging process.
Caught in the treacherous dealings of their lears, and locked in the battles of their lives, the disillusioned Null ARCs and Commandos nonetheless fight with everything they've got, determined to wrest victory from the Seps and save the galaxy.
But even the deadliest weapons may not be powerful enough to defeat the real menace. And nothing will stop the apocalyptic horror unleashed when Palpatine utters the chilling words The time has come. Execute Order 66. Translation: Kill all Jedi.
With their faith in the Republic and their loyalty to their Jedi allies put to the ultimate test, how will the men of Omega and Delta squads react to the most infamous command in galactic history? All the breathtaking action, suspense, and intrigue of Karen Traviss's Republic Commando series comes alive in Star Wars: Order 66.
I was most impress with how Karen Traviss kept so many of the Clone's story's so separate, dramatic, and personal.  In the movies and Clone Wars TV show you only really know of maybe 2 clones, Rex and Cody.  This novel gives such a personal look at the commando's and how they are really taught on Kamino and a big insight on their heritage.  This is actually the 4th book in the Republic Commando Series but leaves the door open for many of the new characters developed in the novel, I'm most curious to see if the love child between a female jedi and Commando has a story later in the time line.  I didn't think I would enjoy this as much as I did but Karen Traviss work in the Star Wars Legacy has been amazing, and she has even been integrating her own Mandalore language in these novels, referred to as Mando'a.
Can't live without death, can't die without life.
Revenge of the Sith - Novel - Old Republic
The Force grows dark, Anakin.....Be wary of your feelings.
The turning point for the entire Star Wars saga is at hand…
After years of civil war, the Separatists have battered the already faltering Republic nearly to the point of collapse. On Coruscant, the Senate watches anxiously as Supreme Chancellor Palpatine aggressively strips away more and more constitutional liberties in the name of safeguarding the Republic. Yoda, Mace Windu, and their fellow Masters grapple with the Chancellor's disturbing move to assume control of the Jedi Council. And Anakin Skywalker, the prophesied Chosen One, destined to bring balance to the Force, is increasingly consumed by his fear that his secret love, Senator Padmé Amidala, will die.
As the combat escalates across the galaxy, the stage is set for an explosive endgame: Obi-Wan undertakes a perilous mission to destroy the dreaded Separatist military leader General Grievous. Palpatine, eager to secure even greater control, subtly influences public opinion to turn against the Jedi. And a conflicted Anakin—tormented by unspeakable visions—edges dangerously closer to the brink of a galaxy-shaping decision. It remains only for Darth Sidious, whose shadow looms ever larger, to strike the final staggering blow against the Republic…and to ordain a fearsome new Sith Lord: Darth Vader.
I think we all know by now Revenge of the Sith was the final chapter for most, of the Star Wars movies.  Matthew Stover's novelization takes a darker and more intense turn Episode 3.  Probably the greatest difference from the movies is the brief elaboration's of the character at key points of the book:
This is Obi-Wan Kenobi:
       A phenomenal pilot whoe doesn't like to fly.  A devastating warrior who'd rather not fight.  A negotiator without peer who frankly prefers to sit alone in a quiet cave and meditate.
      Jedi Master.  General in the Grand Army of the Republic.......
Matthew Stover takes in depth looks into each character at climatic points of the book.  "Mace Windu saw the shattering point of the galaxy was between Anakin, Obi-Wan and The Supreme Chancellor".  You are not left without the most finite detail.
The Dead Star Dragon - There is another form of the dark side represented in the novelization.  Anakin is haunted by the Dead Star Dragon, almost like a fable or fairy tale in the Star Wars EU.  Small peak....
"And it was now that even through that marvelous feeling, the furnace within his heart raged, as the dead star dragon within in whispered tales of failure to his subconscious, though he heard them louder than the cackle of the sparks contacting the floor....."
"The Dead Star Dragon is what is left after stars die."  The fear set in Anakin that everything dies.  "Eventually, even stars burn out."
From Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader the Dead Star Dragon is what haunts him and pushes him in the end.
The Arrest of the Chancellor - We all know the movie killed the Jedi to fast and very lame for most.  The novel didn't get into Plo Koon on Cato Neimodia or Aayla Secura on Felucia, but a very dramatic ending for Kit Fisto, Saessee Tiin, and Agen Kolar.  Not just a light saber to the gut from a helpless old man.  Lets just say we have a thrown light saber thrown decapitating one victim, light saber through the head, and another decapitation, much more dark and gruesome than the cinematic version.  So worth reading, I've actually read it 3 time and enjoy ever minute!!
The dark is generous, and it is patient, and it always wins - but in the heart of its strength lies weakness.  One lone candle is enough to hold it back.  Love is more than a candle.  Love can ignite the stars.
Labyrinth of Evil - Novel - The Old Republic
Embark upon a breathtaking adventure that pairs Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker on a deadly hunt for the lord of evil who has torn the galaxy asunder….
The war that erupted in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones is nearing its boiling point, as the dauntless Separatist forces continue their assault on the teetering Republic—and the diabolical triumvirate of Count Dooku, General Grievous, and their Master, Darth Sidious, fine-tune their strategy for conquest. In Episode III: Revenge of the Sith the fates of key players on both sides of the conflict will be sealed. But first, crucial events that pave the way to that time of reckoning unfold in a labyrinth of evil…
Capturing Trade Federation Viceroy and Separatist Council Member Nute Gunray is the mission that brings Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, with a squad of clones in tow, to Cato Neimoidia. But the treacherous ally of the Sith proves as slippery as ever, evading his Jedi pursuers even as they narrowly avoid deadly disaster. Still, their daring efforts yield an unexpected prize: a unique holotransceiver that bears intelligence capable of leading the Republic forces to their ultimate quarry, the ever-elusive Darth Sidious.
Swiftly taking up the chase, Anakin and Obi-Wan follow clues from the droid factories of Charros IV to the far-flung worlds of the Outer Rim… every step bringing them closer to pinpointing the location of the Sith Lord—whom they suspect has been manipulating every aspect of the Separatist rebellion. Yet somehow, in the escalating galaxy-wide chess game of strikes, counterstrikes, ambushes, sabotage, and retaliations, Sidious stays constantly one move ahead.
Then the trail takes a shocking turn. For Sidious and his minions have set in motion a ruthlessly orchestrated campaign to divide and overwhelm the Jedi forces—and bring the Republic to its knees.
This is not the first time I've read this novel and nor to be the last. Obi-Wan and Anakin fight together as commrads in arms, one of the final and last great battles as the Legend that is Kenobi and Skywalker. You do find out what really transpired and who did and didn't save their skin for the 10th time on Cato Neimodia. Alot of action, and alot of stratigical ploting for both the Jedi and Sith. Great pick up for less than $20 when purchased in the Dark Lord Trilogy. Embrace the darkside, pick up a book!
Did you know......Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas & General Grievous - The Old Republic
If you've watched the movies you've heard of Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas and you know part of the impact on the Attack of the Clones and essentially The Clone Wars. What you may not know is why his impact with General Grievous and how the Sith Lords twisted his precognition of a great war 10 years later to their advantage.
Sifo-Dyas was a Jedi Master who had the gift of precognition and who was also good friends with the Jedi Count Dooku. Sifo-Dyas foretold the Republic would face a great war and secretly ordered the clone army. Count Dooku was no longer of allegiance to the Jedi and an apprentice of Darth Sidious, and was foretold about Sifo-Dyas and his order of the clones. Dooku would later kill Sifo-Dyas casting his allegiance to the Sith. We all know the Clones were used for the Republic for the Clone Wars and were later the Destruction of the Jedi. But......That's not all for Sifo-Dyas.
Dooku kept Sifo-Dyas' body frozen for many years and was put to use to construct the abomination of half sentient and half cyborg creator that is......General Grievous. A blood transfusion was needed to keep what was known original as Kaleesh General Qymaen jai Sheelal alive and turned into General Grievous. An early experiment similar to the construction of DarthVader.
Grievous was in a shuttle that was sabotaged and exploded almost killing Sheelal. Dooku and Sidious commissioned the transformation, that took place on Geonosis, from the Kaleesh General to the wicked General Grievous.
Although I have not found it questioned by any one, I have always wondered, General Grievous states that he has been trained in Jedi Lightsaber combat but knows nothing of the force, baring no force connection. But if it was Sifo-Dyas' blood, and midiclorians are found in the blood, should Grievous had a force connection???
This can be found in the Expanded Universe Comic - The Eyes of Revolution - a short 14 page comic but very important to Star Wars History.
Darth Bane - Hitchhiker Spotlight
"I am Darth Bane, Dark Lord of the Sith. I will survive. At any cost"
Darth Bane, referred to by Darth Siddious as the creater of the rule of two, is probably the greatest Dark Lords to date, and is under my spotlight today. Bane had reinvented the Order of the Sith and has a large impact on the Main Star Wars story line as in many Expanded Universe novels. From being Dessel,  miner on Apatros, to his reign as the Dark Lord of the Sith, this is Hitchhiking with Darth Bane......
"Two there should be; no more, no less. One to embody the power, the other to crave it."
The beginning of Bane, or his birth name Dessel, starts off on Apatros.  Told in 2 different stories, the Comic "Jedi vs Sith" and the novel "Darth Bane - Path of Destruction".  Bane is a cortosis miner who has an exceptional command of the force, with no knowledge why he has these secret skills. He was early to accept the path to destruction from killing his own father to killing a Republic crew member. His brutality and rage ends up with him escaping the hands of Republic forces, and ends up joining the low ranks of the Sith Army. He defies his commanding officers orders during battle to ultimately save his team from ultimate defeat, and ends up arrested and sentanced to death.
Instead of death, his powers are recognized and he is transferred to the Sith Academy on Korriban. He takes on the name Bane upon his journey thru the ways of the Sith. After much treachery, death, and defiance in the academy, Bane becomes the black ball because he challenges the leaders of the Sith who are called the Brotherhood of Darkness, a democratic society of Sith Lords. Bane studies the ways of the ancient Sith and discovers secrets, and ways of the Sith from long ago, and attempts to recreate the Sith based on his learning’s from Darth Revan, as found in Knights of the Old Republic Video Game.
Bane creates the thought bomb to entomb all the Sith Lords so he is the only heir of the Sith. Although he is poisoned by former partner and seeks guidance from the only healer, Caleb, on Ruusan who will not heal any Jedi nor Sith for the Invasion of his home world. Bane will die with no healing so he threatens to kill Calebs daughter (Serra) and he ends up healing Bane. Bane finds force sensitive young girl named Rain and starts training his first apprentice, Darth Zannah.
Thru the Rule of Two and Dynasty of Evil novels, Caleb will end up dead at the hands of Zannah for no longer being of use to the Sith. Serra will seek out Bane with a bounty hunter. Bane will have expected Zannah to attempt to remove him from his title as Dark Lord by battling to death, but hasn't, so seeks a new apprentice as well as the knowledge from Legendary Darth Andeddu for the secret to eternal life. Sorry, I don't want to spoil to much of the story yet.  Really, really good reads!
Darth Bane is mentioned in Episode one for the creator of the rule of two. Luke Skywalker and Kyle Katarn, ultimately release all the souls entombed in the thought bomb during Dark Forces: Jedi Knight. Bane is also featured as one of his holocrons that was accessed by Darth Kryyat during the Legacy of the Jedi Comic.
Legacy of Jax Pavan - Hidden Star Wars EU Gem
I've nicknamed this the Pavan Hexology, as author Michael Reaves has hooked me on his Star Wars novels and has created an epic 6 story journey into the life, and death of Lorn Pavan. Lorn Pavan life did not succeed farther than his first novel, but he's dying wishes and son's legacy carried on past order 66 and has yet to end. As the 3 Coruscant Night Novels and the Death Star Novel (bonus Reaves Story) are like the Original Trilogy, Shadow Hunter, Medstar 1 and 2 are like the Prequalogy, although I must say for this set you must read the Prequals first, unlike the movies!!
Lorn Pavan starts off as an information broker with his long time, partner in crime I-5YQ. A very similar model to C-3PO, but with a little more kick ass, and a little less eccentric! With in the story, you find out Lorn gave up his only son to the Jedi because he was found force sensitive and Lorn was later exiled from his duty as a worker at the Jedi Academy. The motley crew as informationists came a crossed a deal that resulted in a death wish from Darth Sidious. Lorn was hunted by Sith Apprentice Darth Maul, and regretfully he had help from a few late Jedi that changed his vision on the Jedi but ultimately met his fate from Darth Maul. His last wish was for I5-YQ to seek and protect his only son, Jax Pavan.
I-5YQ thru his journeys joins us next in the Med Star 1 and 2 novels, after his memory was almost completely wiped. He is joined by Jedi Barriss Offee, jedi healer, on planet Drongar working as a medical assistant during the Clone Wars. Working with many misfits I-5YQ finds companionship with the others in the Rimsoo (hospital), he finds a way to make his self "drunk" and finds a wookie really can rip his arms off (we've all heard the warning). I-5YQ ends his time on Drongar and leaves with his Sullastan friend Den Dhur to leave for Coruscant to find Jax, but smuggled the wonder drug bota for examination at the Jedi Temple. Thru his journey 1 & 2 he regains his knowledge of his former master Lorn.
The Coruscant Night series was epic for me as it included Vader, Black Sun, the search for Jax Pavan and conversion of Jax from Bounty Hunter back to Jedi. He survived order 66 and lived in the underbelly slums of Coruscant but was actively hunted by Darth Vader, Prince Xizor, and Aurra Sing (who was eventually killed by Jax), until his final encounter and battle with Vader.  Jax Pavan discovers his father and his true calling as a Jedi thru these three incredible stories.
Death Star is kind of an addition to the Reaves lore of his stories but really only contains one of the characters from the first 6 novels. He has many stories lines telling the story from the inside of the original Death Star, from construction to destruction.
Although attachment is forbidden in the Jedi Order, Reaves creates a real connection with is characters and the story lines they possess. The whole time I was reading Coruscant Nights I was rooting for the underdog Jax to defeat Vader, but we know he isn't going to completely defeat Vader, but he keeps it interesting and hopefully we will see more of Jax Pavan in his future novels. I'm going to review each in the future, but these are all worth reading, Michael Reaves does a killer job with his Star Wars novels and I'm hoping for more!
For next time, remember..........Peace is a lie, there is only passion......
Always in motion, the future is...
What is as good as watching Star Wars??? Playing Star Wars!
Late 2010 we are anticipating the release of 1 epic game and one awesome sequel.
The Old Republic - Deceived Trailer - Set in the Star Wars timeline over 3000 years before the destruction of the first Death Star, is the sacking of Coruscant. Most of the Jedi are lured off planet for Sith negotiations as the Sith have deceived the Jedi and are attacking Coruscant.
The Old Republic is an MMORPG, like WOW, where you create your own identity and create your own story in Star Wars, from Jedi to Sith, to Smugglers and Bounty Hunters, this game for PC is going to be as legendary as the movies themselves. Enjoy the trailer.
.
The Force Unleashed II, really no details on plot other than Galen is back, we thought he died in the first (sorry for the spoiler) but this one hopes to fulfill as the first......
Thats all for today......
